Common questions

What is a skills assessment?

It's a formal check that your skills and experience match the job you're being sponsored for. For some jobs you must have one before you can lodge a 482 visa application.

Which jobs need one?

Mostly trades — chef, cook, carpenter, electrician, motor mechanic, welder, fitter and similar — plus program or project administrator. Search your job in the tool to check.

Does my passport matter?

Yes. For most jobs, it only applies if you hold a passport from certain countries. Program or project administrator is the exception — it applies to everyone.

What if I already hold a 457 or 482 visa?

If you already hold one and you're working in Australia in the same job, you may not need a skills assessment. You'll still need to show evidence.

Who does the assessment?

Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) for trade jobs, and VETASSESS for program or project administrator. The tool tells you which one applies to you.

Does this tell me if I qualify for a 482 visa?

No — it answers one question only. Use the full Eligibility Checker for the bigger picture.
